Just what is Americana music? Some would say it's a combination of
country, rock, blues, bluegrass, folk, rockabilly, swing, honky-tonk, zydeco,
and cowboy music. Others would say it's drawn from the rawest edges of
those genres. Many, including the Americana Music Association, say simply
that the lyrically-driven music defies definition, while others say it's just
something your cousin in Austin made up.
All that said, just how would you describe the music of Homemade
Water? Bandmates Jody Duvall, Aaron Joyce, Tom Larson, and Kyle Hopkins
would say, "It's People Music." Listen to some of the lyrics from Jody's
Muddy Possum River:
Well I was born on the Muddy Possum River
and that's where my pap taught us to play.
It'd sound so sweet, it made us shiver,
same song, same place every day,
on the Muddy Possum
Now granddaddy's still was in the holler
on the other side of the ridge
We called his shine homemade water
and sipped it underneath the bridge
on the Muddy Possum
That's Homemade Water, intelligent, original, straight from
the tap. Take a sip.
But don't just take our word for it. The Nashville
Scene's "Annual Best of Nashville" issue lists Homemade Water as one of the top
two "Up & Coming Local Bands" and as one of the top three "Best New Bands."
In addition, Jody Duvall took home honors as one of the top two "Non-Major Label
Songwriters." These awards are no mean feat in Music City, where it ain't
just country music, and where saying the competition is fierce is very much an
understatement.
